Veil House
Location: Lincoln Park, Chicago, IL
Year: 2005
Size: 18,000 sf
Envisioned while employed at Gluck + Architecture, the project was the initial design concept for a client that desired a significant street presence with a great deal of natural light from the west while preserving privacy for their family. The design manifested into a house with a "veil" to the street; a translucent glass scrim suspended from the facade by thin steel supports. Behind the veil are the services spaces, baths and circulation which create openings for light to enter and allow for a clear an open arrangement of the communal, and living and sleeping spaces that face the elevated and undulating yard to the rear of the house. A pool, garage, gathering and utility spaces occupy the area below the yard.
