A former multi-family row house is converted into an open, light filled home for a family of three in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn. 

 

The building was reimagined by the creative-minded owners to preserve the historic aspects of the building while integrating contemporary elements and finishes throughout. The kitchen/dining/living room floor was opened up by removing partitions and the central bearing walls and the existing beams were supported on heavy timber, Glulam beams. These exposed beams were also used on the bedroom floor and support a new, sustainable TPO roof and deck above.

 

The existing stairs have been refurbished and a sinuous steel railing winds through the home connecting all of the floors and culminating at a bulkhead that accesses the new roof deck which affords dramatic views to New York Harbor and the Manhattan skyline. Found objects are used throughout and the owners' artwork hang on the walls. In the master bath, a re-purposed ceramic tub supported by wooden blocks sets within custom made white ceramic tiles paired with herringbone stone mosaics. Creative combinations of materials, furnishings and color permeate this house.

The backyard was designed to become an urban oasis and highlights an existing, large tree, gracefully completing the composition.
