The renovation and addition to a row house in the evolving neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn. The existing building was in poor shape but possessed a lot of architectural merit. Our team worked closely with the clients on a tight budget to envision a home that capitalizes on the historic elements of the house while providing for modern living and creative interventions.

 

An extension was added to the rear of the house that connects the kitchen to a study and leads to a winding stair that descends to a laundry/mud room below. To the side, a bedroom extension to the tenant space is created which in turn allows for a raised terrace adjacent to the study above. All of these elements are sculpturally interwoven on the rear facade both formally and materially.

Where possible, elements of the former home have been re-purposed and/or expressed throughout: For example, an old marble and brass sink basin was discovered restored and used in the master bath. A salvaged live-edge brown ash wood table top is used as the table in the study and antique brass fixtures have been repaired and used in the baths and kitchen.
