VEIL HOUSE

Chicago, IL
Unbuilt

This project was designed as a sequence of layers providing an array of spectacles in which the seasons and weather are as much a part of the experience of living in the house as the normal activities of daily life. The client desired to have a direct connection to the street and the west sunset without the intrusion of unwanted eyes and also desired to have unencumbered access to a large backyard within the urban environment. A vertical poche’ of circulation and utilitarian spaces and a translucent, undulating scrim (veil) provide this fi lter through which one can see but not be seen and where inhabitation would be expressed on the facade like a shadow puppet theater
